The story
Do you know what magicians do to untangle knots? Certainly magicians use the magic word and a very usual blow. Check it out. This is a rope. Let your audience to examine the rope. I tie a knot. Let me make it harder, I tie the second knot. OK, let make it really-really hard. I tie three knots. The magician presents three knots on the rope. Would you please say the magic word and blow on the knots? Abracadabra pooh! Whoa. You almost blew me away! And look, the knots disappeared! The magician almost flew away and of course the knots disappeared. Believe it or not, but you have a very magic blow.
The secret
Materials: a three foot rope.
The secret of the trick is in the way you tie the knots. This magic doesn’t require any special skills on your part. You simply have to memorize the order and ways of making knots. I’m going to place the rope on the table just for purpose of this instruction. So you will be able to see the exact way I make the knots. You have to spend time performing this trick on the table, till you understand well how this trick is done. Then you may practice in front of a mirror the usual way you will perform the trick—by holding the rope in your hands. Place the rope on the table in a shape of a semicircle or a letter U (Pic 1).
To make the first knot you have to cross the ends of the rope. Bring the right end of the rope to the left. Bring the left end over the other end of the rope to the right (Pic 2).
Bring the left end of the rope inside of the loop (Pic 3).
Pull the left end of the rope through the loop to your left (Pic 4). Pull both ends of the rope apart tightening the loop. Make the loop big enough to pull your hand through it.
Tie the second knot. Bring the left end of the rope to the right. Bring the right end over the other end of the rope to the left (Pic 5).
Pull the left end of the rope through the loop to your left (Pic 6). Pull both ends of the rope apart tightening the loop. Make the loop big enough to pull your hand through it.
Make the third knot. Put the right end of the rope under the loop of the first knot (Pic 7).
Pull the right end of the rope through the loop to your right (Pic 8).
Put the right end of the rope under the loop of the second knot (Pic 9).
Pull the right end of the rope through the loop to your right (Pic 10). You have made the third knot.
Pull the ends of the rope apart and all three knots will disappear (Pic 11). You may ask your audience (a child would be the best candidate) to say the magic word and to blow on the knots. Right when the child blows you have to quickly pull the ends of the rope apart all the way. The knots will untie (disappear). You may even pretend that the child blow so hard that you almost flew away (step back or make a flip turn, just check in advance that there is nobody behind of you!). This trick works best for little kids (they love to blow you away) and you may repeat it many times to the same audience. Have fun and happy twisting :)
