Thumb Penetration

The story
I will show you that a rubber band can actually penetrate my thumb and what’s really amazing is that it will not break itself or my thumb! Check it out. Let the audience check that it is a real rubber band without any secrets in it. Get the rubber band in your hand and hang it over your thumb. I will make a loop of the rubber band around my thumb. Loop the rubber band around the thumb and bring the index finger to the thumb to make the OK sign. You can see that there is no way to take the rubber band of my thumb without breaking my fingers or the rubber band, right? Well everything is possible in the presence of magic. Watch me carefully. Abracadabra pooh. Blow slightly toward your thumb. The rubber band visibly penetrated your finger! Here we are. The magic happened. And you can see that the rubber band is intact as well as my thumb. Show the rubber band and wave your thumb to your audience.
The secret
Materials: a rubber band.
It’s one of those tricks that can be repeated many times. It requires a bit of practice to master it. You will need a rubber band. The secret is in the way a magician makes a loop around the thumb. Let see how it’s done from the audience view. Hang the rubber band on the thumb of your left hand. Keep your left palm half way up (Pic 1).

Grab the rubber band with fingers of your right hand. Hold your right palm half way up facing you and slightly stretch the rubber band (Pic 2).

Grab the upper string of the rubber band with a finger of your right hand and stretch it away from you. At the same time turn your hands slightly inward (palms down). You have made three loops. You have to bring the loop on your left thumb through the loop around your right fingers that’s marked with a red X (Pic 3).

Put your left thumb through this loop (Pic 4).

Pull the loop on your right fingers over the loop on your left thumb (Pic 5). Keep the rubber band slightly stretched. The loop around your left finger is locked now by the tension you created by stretching the rubber band. It seems that you have made two loops around your left thumb. Pull the finger of your left hand out from the loop. Important note: release of the locked loop depends on how hard/easy you stretch the rubber band!

You have to practice with each kind of rubber band to find the exact tension that holds the loop on your thumb as long as you need it (Pic 6). Lock the index finger and the thumb of your left hand in OK sign.

Say some magic word and pull the lower string of the rubber band with finger of your right hand. It will “magically” release the loop from your left thumb (Pic 7).

The next set of pictures shows how this trick is done from your (the magician) point of view. Let’s repeat it together. Hang the rubber band on the thumb of your left hand (Pic 8).

Grab the rubber band with fingers of your right palm facing you. Hold your right palm half way up and slightly stretch the rubber band (Pic 9).

Turn your palms slightly outward (face up) and grab the upper string of the rubber band with a finger of your left hand (Pic 10). You may want to pull down the lower string with the index finger of your right hand.

Turn your hands inward (palms down). This move will make three loops. You have to bring the loop on your left thumb through the loop around your right fingers that’s marked with a red X (Pic 11).

Put your left thumb through this loop (Pic 12 and 13).

Pull the loop on your right fingers over the loop on your left thumb (Pic 14). Keep the rubber band slightly stretched. The loop around your left finger is locked now by the tension you created by stretching the rubber band.

Pull the finger of your left hand from the loop. It seems that you have made two loops around of your left thumb (Pic 15).

Lock you left the index finger and the thumb in an OK sign (Pic 16).

Say a magic word and pull the lower string of the rubber band. It releases the loop from your left thumb (Pic 17). Congratulations, you have made the magic! Remember to keep the secret of your magic. It’s the only guarantee of your success. Have fun and happy twisting :)
