The story

This is not a real magic but it has puzzled many people. As a matter of fact it puzzled everyone who has seen it! Check it out. Here is a regular rubber band. The magician shows a rubber band. I’m hanging it over my thumb and tangle the rubber band over the index finger and the thumb. The magician loops the rubber band around the index finger and the thumb. Hold my thumb firmly. Don’t try to break it, just hold it. There is no way to take the rubber band off of my thumb because you hold my thumb. Watch it. Abracadabra Barambum! The rubber band jumps off of the thumb and hangs over the index finger. The rubber band went through my thumb. Neat, isn’t it?!

The secret

Materials: a rubber band.

The secret of this magic trick is in the way the magician makes a loop around the thumb and the index finger. Let see how it’s done from the magician view. Hang the rubber band over your left thumb. Hold your left hand palm down (Pic 1).

Your right hand is palm up facing you. Grab the rubber band with two fingers of your right hand (Pic 2).

Swing your right hand away from you stretching the rubber band below the left index finger (Pic 3).

Loop the rubber band over the left index finger. Stretch the rubber band to your left thumb. Your right hand is palm down. Important: you have to place each string of the rubber band on a different joint of the index finger: the left string goes closer to the base of the finger and the right string goes over the middle joint of the index finger. Make sure the strings not intersect each other at any point (Pic 4).

Hang the rubber band over your left thumb and move your right hand off away from your left hand (Pic 5 and 6).

Ask someone from your audience to hold your right thumb firmly (Pic 7).

Explain to your audience that there is no way for you to take the rubber band off your left thumb. Indeed it seems to be impossible. Say a magic word and let the right string of the rubber band to slide off your left index finger. You do it simply by bending your left index finger (Pic 8).

This move will release the rubber band from your left thumb. Quickly, straighten the left index finger. The rubber band hangs only over your index finger (Pic 9).

Your audience may release your thumb (Pic 10). Congratulations, you have made the magic. This trick can be repeated successfully many times to the same audience. Remember to keep the secret of your magic. It’s the only guarantee of your success. Have fun and happy twisting :)
